Overview

The Project Manager – Utilities is responsible for leading and delivering complex projects within the utilities sector, including infrastructure upgrades, network expansions, and service improvement initiatives. This role requires strong expertise in managing projects that involve regulatory compliance, stakeholder coordination, and integration of technical and operational systems.

The successful candidate will oversee resources, schedules, and budgets while ensuring adherence to industry standards, safety regulations, and governance frameworks. They will proactively identify and mitigate risks, resolve issues, and manage change requests to ensure timely and successful delivery.

Responsibilities

 

  • Plan and design utility projects, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements and operational objectives.
  • Monitor progress and performance, initiating corrective actions to maintain timelines and quality standards.
  • Manage project budgets, track actual vs. forecasted expenditures, and provide accurate financial reporting.
  • Coordinate with third-party contractors, suppliers, and delivery partners, ensuring compliance and timely fulfilment of obligations.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal teams, external stakeholders, and regulatory bodies.
  • Identify and manage risks and issues, including environmental, safety, and operational impacts.
  • Operate change control processes throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Track and report interdependencies with other projects and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
  • Ensure appropriate resourcing, including specialist technical expertise, to meet delivery plans.
  • Provide regular progress updates through highlight reports and agreed reporting mechanisms.

 

Qualifications

  • Desirable Certifications: MAPM, Scrum Master, PMP, Prince2

Essential skills

 

  • Proven track record of delivering utility infrastructure or energy projects on time, within scope, and within budget.
  • Strong knowledge of industry regulations, safety standards, and compliance requirements.
  • Experience with project management methodologies such as PRINCE2, Agile, and Waterfall.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to manage multidisciplinary teams and coordinate across matrix organisations.
  • Proficient in resource planning, forecasting, and contractor management.
  • Strong risk and issue management capabilities, including problem-solving and mitigation strategies.
  • Experience engaging with senior stakeholders, regulatory authorities, and client teams.

 

Desired skills

  • Business Analyst Experience
  • Networking: design, deployment, troubleshooting of LAN/WAN, VPNs, routing and switching
  • Data centre: provisioning, migrations, capacity planning, vendor management

Experience

 

  • Extensive project management experience within the utilities sector (electricity, gas, water, or energy infrastructure).
  • Demonstrated experience in managing large-scale capital projects or network upgrades.
  • Hands-on experience working with regulatory bodies and compliance frameworks.
  • Proven ability to manage contractors and third-party suppliers in a regulated environment.
  • Familiarity with health, safety, and environmental standards relevant to utilities projects.
  • Experience in budget management and cost control for multi-million-pound projects.
  • Strong background in risk assessment and mitigation strategies for operational and technical challenges.
