Overview

We are looking for an experienced, technically astute Project Planner to work with our client at their site in Belfast on a contract basis. The rate is negotiable based on experience and seniority. The initial duration will be 6 months, with potential for extension.

This role focuses on the technical delivery planning of complex engineering projects in the maritime sector, ensuring milestones are achieved on time and in alignment with stringent industry standards. The Project Planner will work closely with engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, regulatory, and commercial teams, acting as the central point for project scheduling, tracking, and coordination in a fast-paced, innovative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and optimise detailed project schedules using tools such as Gantt charts and resource allocation plans.
  • Break down high-level project deliverables into actionable, trackable tasks tailored to maritime engineering processes.
  • Monitor and manage task dependencies across design, procurement, fabrication, assembly, sea trials, and commissioning phases.
  • Identify potential schedule risks, delays, or resource conflicts early and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Liaise between internal teams (engineering, manufacturing, supply chain) and external stakeholders (shipyards, classification societies, suppliers, and regulatory bodies).
  • Maintain visibility of project status from prototype development through to vessel/system production readiness.
  • Prepare and deliver clear, concise progress reports for leadership and stakeholders.
  • Support the continuous improvement of planning processes, templates, and reporting methods.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Project Management, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Recognised project management or planning certification desirable (e.g., APM PMQ, PRINCE2, PMI-SP, or equivalent).
  • Proficiency in project planning and scheduling software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera P6, Smartsheet).

Essential skills

  • Strong technical understanding of maritime or offshore engineering principles and processes.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain project schedules for complex, multi-disciplinary projects in the marine industry.
  • Excellent organisational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Effective communication and stakeholder management skills across diverse technical and non-technical teams.
  • Ability to work independently and proactively manage priorities in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment.

Desired skills

  • Knowledge of vessel classification, maritime certification processes, and industry regulatory frameworks.
  • Familiarity with supply chain and manufacturing constraints specific to marine or nautical projects.
  • Understanding of sea trial processes, commissioning activities, and lifecycle support.
  • Awareness of Earned Value Management (EVM) or similar project performance tracking methodologies.

Experience

  • Experience in marine or offshore engineering projects will be highly advantageous.
  • Experience in shipbuilding, refit/retrofit projects, offshore structures, or marine systems integration.
  • Demonstrated experience as a Project Planner, Planning Engineer, or similar scheduling role within maritime, shipbuilding, offshore, or nautical engineering environments.
  • Track record of supporting cross-functional marine projects from concept design through to commissioning and delivery.
  • Hands-on experience with multi-phase, multi-stakeholder schedules in the marine or offshore engineering sector.
